Most people are not aware that the Carolinas are the northern most east coast states to host hard coral. As a result, the Carolinas have been overlooked by the global reef renewal efforts. There has been a successful artificial reef effort that includes reef balls and wrecks to provide structure for reef building. However, no intentional coral monitoring and enhancement effort had been attempted prior to the launch of the Carolina Reef Foundation. The urgency for launching and funding a comprehensive reef monitoring and renewal program in the Carolinas has never been more evident.
Shallow water reefs in this region, particularly those hosting the vulnerable Oculina Robusta hard coral are facing unprecedented threats from climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation. These delicate ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting marine biodiversity, providing habitat for countless species, and acting as natural barriers against shoreline erosion. However, escalating stressors are causing a decline in coral health, with adverse effects rippling through the entire marine ecosystem.
A dedicated reef renewal program is imperative to protect and enhance these shallow water reefs, promoting the recovery of Oculina Robusta and ensuring the resilience of the entire ecosystem. By launching this initiative, we aim to not only safeguard the unique marine life in the Carolinas but also create a model for sustainable reef management that can be replicated and adapted globally. The funding support sought will enable us to implement strategic interventions, conduct vital research, and engage local communities in the shared responsibility of preserving these invaluable natural assets.
